Based on the 12th century Cathedral of St. Dimitry, Vladimir, St. Nicholas Cathedral and National War Memorial was designed by Anatoly Abramov-Neratoff and construction started in 1961. The building, at 3500 Massachusetts Avenue, NW,Washington,DC, was dedicated in 1963, but it was not until 1991-1994 that the iconography, also based on St. Dimitry, was painted by artists from Russia. The Latin cross interior is light filled, but not large, although one might not even notice as the wall iconography is captivating and lifts the viewer’s eyes to the lantern above, as well as to the wall above the raised platform at the front of the sanctuary.
This Cathedral is close to St. Sophia (Greek Orthodox) and The National Cathedral (Episcopalean)
