In 1819, Walt Whitman was born in this house.  In addition to the restored house, there is an interpretative center and modern barn, which have exhibitions.  The photos show the front of the house (early 19th century) and an earlier structure to the right (supposedly 18th century), a coin nailed into a baluster, and linens and iron.  Not shown here is a wooden box filled with carpenter’s tools.  A house with modest rooms and virtually no decoration except for the fireplace mantels. Other photos to be posted later.

Walt is buried in Camden, NJ.  He was a nurse in Washington,DC during the Civil War and wrote poignantly about the experience.
